Recently, I've opened up my own indoor golf training studio to allow my students to work on their games during the winter months. A good portion of this indoor training involves golf fitness, especially flexibility and core strength exercises. The flexibility exercises are based upon my martial arts and yoga training I received for eight years. It is my belief that increased flexibility most important to the training of golfers. I find that lack of flexibility is what limits the ability of most golfers to improve their golf swings. Greater flexibility allows for a greater range of motion. As such, if you can generate a bigger, more fluid golf swing, you will automatically be able to hit the ball farther.
The strength training exercises I recommend to my students come in three components. I do not believe that golf specific exercises are enough to increase swing speed once flexibility is adequate. I believe that overall strength training is a key ingredient. A stronger body will result in fewer injuries. All you have to do is look at today's PGA Tour stars to understand that they believe it is necessary to train like an athlete to stay on top of their games. With that in mind, I often recommend a mix of free weight training and Kung Fu based exercises to develop the body.
Added to these exercises, I also recommend a number of the products offered by Golf Gym. These include weighted clubs, the Power Swing Trainer, Balance Ball, Medicine Ball, and training bands. They provide you with a number of exercises and DVDs with each item. I find that these tools are excellent to use prior to any round of golf, or prior to any practice session on the range. Not only will they help you with improving your golf fitness, they will also help you improve your golf swing! Check them out here! Or, click on the banner at the top of this page!
